Recently, I played through the remake of Ratchet and Clank. It was great at taking the player back to a game they remember while managing to create a new experience to enjoy. A well-done remake can play on nostalgia while still offering enough new content to change the experience and give new players, worried about graphic fidelity, a chance to play the greats of the past. So without further ado, in no particular order, here are four old games that deserve a remake.
1. Super Mario 64
Easily one of the best 3D platformers ever made, Super Mario 64 is long overdue for an overhaul. The game offers hours of wonderful levels, and the design is wonderful. But, it does suffer from the early 3D polygonal models. Little would need to be done as far as gameplay goes, but a nice overhaul on the graphics would allow people to rediscover the wonderful gameplay mechanics and whimsical levels. This is for sure a game that should not be allowed to fall into obscurity, only being a fond memory and a nostalgic reminiscence. Everyone should play it, and with better graphics, people would flock to it.
2.Final Fantasy Tactics
Tactics games are challenging and rewarding. They inspire critical thought and attention to detail. In my opinion, no game has done it better than Final Fantasy Tactics. I know that pixel art games have made a comeback. However, FF Tactics could break through the niche scene and become much more than just another throwback. With games like Halo Wars and Xcom, players have shown that there is still a good market for big budget strategy based games. Final Fantasy 7 is already getting the remake treatment, but Tactics is in much more need.
3.The Legend of Zelda
The Legend of Zelda holds a special place in my heart. When I was a kid many years ago, I woke up one Christmas day to find that I finally got that NES that I begged for so long. With that gift came the realization that sometimes that gift your parents bought for you, was really for them. I watched them play MY Nintendo and game for days. They loved it, and truthfully, I loved watching it. The game was engrossing. It wasn’t the standard side-scrolling platform game, it was a true adventure. I have often thought that this game gets passed up by newer players because, comparatively, it just looks old and bad. But, with a Windwaker style makeover, it could be amazing again.
4.Mega Man (Any of them)
Take your pick of Mega Man title. Most likely, someone will talk about how awesome it is and how difficult it is. What I would like to see done, to bring this franchise back from the grave, is a Mirror’s Edge style remake. It would make the platforming possible while bringing the game into today’s video game climate. Not to mention, the game would work amazingly well as an open world first person shooter. It could almost be a retro-futuristic Dark Souls.
