Marvel and Square Enix: 5 Games I want

I have been a Marvel fan since I was maybe 6 or 7 years old. I have also been a fan of Square Enix since I was 8. So imagine how excited I was when I woke up one morning to the news that Marvel and Square Enix have teamed up to start developing Video Games. On January 26th, 2017, Square Enix announced they will be publishing multiple games that are being tentatively titled: “The Avengers Project”. They are being developed by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal and they will apparently feature a totally unique story.

The only thing to go on right now is a teaser unfortunately but the fanboy in me cant help to already speculate on what this means for Marvel’s future in the video game industry. Prior to this announcement to only Marvel game that has been announced was Marvel vs Capcom Infinite. Now, I love Marvel vs Capcom but it does not scratch my itch for a Marvel video game. This announcement opens up a whole world of possibilities for Marvel to finally take their place in the video game world.

Now, While I am in part writing this article to inform you of this historic partnership of two great companies I am also writing this to totally nerd out and tell you 5 games I want from this in list form. So without further ado, I present my first list:

The Punisher

The last Punisher game came out in 2009. It was an arena based first person shooter developed by Zen Studios. It’s also garbage. I would like a 3rd Person shooter where I play as Frank Castle. Crystal Dynamics could straight up copy Tomb Raider and I would still probably play this. You could do a simplistic grounded story with shoot em up mechanics and cool execution moves. I actually have a story concept in my head. Basically the game is about S.H.I.E.L.D. dropping Frank into a villian’s island to shut down production of a nuclear bomb in exchange for amnesty. With the Netflix series in development and the popularity of Jon Bernthal in Daredevil season 2 I think Marvel would be stupid to pass up this opportunity. The Punisher would be a home run for Square Enix. Its a match made in heaven and they just need to pull the trigger

Yes I am choosing another Netflix character. This one holds a special place in my heart seeing as though he is my favorite Marvel character. He also would provide a perfect counter to DC’s Arkham series.  You could use his radar vision to track Kingpins henchmen and  bring justice to Hell’s Kitchen. You could make a pretty good Arkham-like game with a character like Daredevil. If Marvel is serious about pushing it’s TV and Movie franchises these Defenders characters are a perfect. You could make some pretty good action games with simplistic plots and decent mechanics with these characters. This is a primary reason I am excited for this partnership.

New Warriors

Look, If the Avengers can get the Crystal Dynamic and Eidos Montreal treatment then so can the New Warriors. The New Warriors are a rather weird group of super heroes. They aren’t really misfits but they aren’t really A-Listers either. This would be a good way to cash in on Marvel’s upcoming New Warriors show and satisfy the crazy nerds like me who always want Marvel to push their more obscure stuff. Not only that, but their power sets would be mechanically interesting to play depending on what version of the New Warriors you will be playing as. I would be most interested to play as Speedball. They could do some really cool movement mechanics with him. This one I want but don’t expect, but a boy can dream.

The Thunderbolts

Ok, hear me out here. In this list I am proposing at least 2 other team games. I understand this but do not care. The Thunderbolts are a team of villains so it would be a nice contrast to playing as a bunch of boring Do-Gooders. As for what version of Thunderbolts I want, the choice is obvious. The Red Hulk version of The Thunderbolts would be a perfect way to tie them to the Avengers. Not only that, the inclusion of Agent Venom could also potentially tie to Sony’s upcoming Spider Man game. Which I also am dying to play based on a teaser alone. The Thunderbolts could be a great contrast to The Avenger’s tone and could appeal to the older crowd of gamers.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3

Oh you thought this list was going to be all characters and teams? You are mistaken my friends. Yes, I believe its time to resurrect this dearly beloved series as an Action RPG. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 was released in 2009. It’s been 7 years Marvel, it’s time. The driving force behind this series is the ability to create your own super team out of a roster of some of the greatest Marvel characters ever. The raw power of consoles and PC’s nowadays and turning the game into an Action RPG with a large roster of characters is a slam dunk for both companies. As with the Punisher game, all Marvel needs to do is pull the trigger.

In conclusion, I look forward to seeing whatever it is the Avengers Project turns out to be. I hope that this partnership is a giant step forward for Marvel’s video game division. If not Marvel’s legacy will forever be bad mobile games and making different variations of Spider-Man 2 every 4 or so years. Both of those are not things I or any other Marvel Fan wants.
