Comic Book media has lost one of its finest stars. Van Williams the man behind the domino-masked role of “The Green Hornet,” is no longer with us. Williams passed away at the age of eighty-two.
Variety reports that he actually died last week on Nov. 28th but the information was made public only yesterday. He earned his first big break in 1959 with a leading role on the ABC private detective series “Bourbon Street”. Williams followed that up with “Surfside 6,” opposite Troy Donahue.
However, it was on the short-lived superhero series “Green Hornet” that Williams made a lasting mark as newspaper publisher Britt Reid, who fought crime as the masked Green Hornet alongside his partner Kato, so memorably played by Bruce Lee.
The adaptation of the Green Hornet radio series was cancelled after only one season. Soon after Williams’ co-star Bruce Lee became an international movie star, Williams’ career started to slow down. After smaller roles on television, Williams had a substantial role on “How the West Was Won” and in 1980 retired from acting altogether.
Williams is survived by his wife Vicki Flanax.
